SINGAPORE : In another worksite accident in Singapore, reinforcement bars have collapsed at the construction site of Fusionpolis at Ayer Rajah Avenue.

SCDF says it received a call at about 1.45pm about the collapse.

Fifteen workers have been taken to hospital and five workers are unaccounted for.

Civil Defence says it is conducting search and rescue work at the site using two rescue dogs.

There are also four ambulances and four fire engines at the scene.

Fusionpolis is located next to the Insead Building along Ayer Rajah Ave One.

Last week, the collapse of a temporary wall at an MRT construction site caused a road section along Nicoll Highway to cave in, leaving four dead. – CNA

I saw in a post at Clubsnap.com that someone is selling his second hand Canon G2 for $400.

Well, I am able to get a brand new G3 from Japan for $399, and thus I posted and told him that the price is abit too high, he may wanna lower it abit.

The next thing I know, I am being labelled as a liar!

some example replies to my remark:
“the strange occurrence is not the price. it’s just plain simple that it’s wrong. the strange occurrence is the ignorance and sheer ignominity and stupidity of the one who posted that message.”

“esay, show the proof to shut us up!”

“..Even if you see the G3 camera in Japan, and it is sold for 399SGD, good for you. But the thing is we don’t travel, and the cost of going to japan purposedly and get one back, with no canon warranty coverage here, is how much?..”

They even went to the extend of checking out the prices in Japan and trying to say that I am lying.

wow!

Now, the thing is, I am getting it direct from the plant. These fuckers have no idea that I am getting it at staff price.

Now, I have a few questions in my mind:
1. my god! what has made this people to be so egoistic?
2. where did they learn to behave as if they are always right and others are always wrong?
3. why are they such sour grapes?

Seriously, if they had asked me nicely, I would have happily told them and get it for them if possible. But now, why the hell should I even help them man? Even if they start to talk nicely to me now, I dun give a shit!

I am truly disaapointed in these people…

PS: and damn, these people should use spell checkers and brush up their English man…

finally settled.

after some screwing and screaming and calls to the director’s office, the matter is finally resolved.

Joanne from OCBC card center called and said sorry many many times… dun worry Joanne, I am not angry with you… just with whoever did the mistake and refuse to say sorry.

The lawfirm also called up earlier and mentioned that they will be writing to us a letter of apology and also to make sure things are cleared up.

ahh… I feel so much better now….

and I suddenly feel hungry…

after that call…

Ξ April 26th, 2004 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Uncategorized |

well… no calls from either party so far, after one annoying one from Ronald Tan on Saturday, which simply asks us to ignore the letter, and he said that with an attitude.

So how can I let things off so easily?

Have already informed my dad to call one of OCBC’s directors and inform him of the issue. Lets see what will be done… Maybe they will write off the interests for my Housing Loan?? haha *fat hope*

anyway, I wrote in to them again to inform them of the progress, unlike them, just keeping quiet…

Hi all,

I am writing in with reference to my previous mail with the same subject.

A call was made on 23rd Apr 2004 to Mr Ronald Tan, as indicated in your letter from WLAW LLC. But no one answered the call, and I left a message.

On 24th Apr 2004, I received a call from Ronald Tan, and he has informed me to ignore the letter.

In return, I have requested that the following be done:

1. A written notice that my wife
a. does not owe OCBC any amount of money with respect to the above accounts
b. has nothing in connection to the above accounts
2. A letter of apology
3. that this incident will NOT be recorded with Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Credit Bureau Singapore Pte Ltd (CBS), the Association of Banks of Singapore (ABS) or any credit authorities, and if it has already been recorded, these records should be removed immediately.
4. and a letter stating that item(3) has been performed.

Unfortunately, he insisted that this case is not/will not be reported, and I assume he will not be preparing a letter to clear items (3) and (4).

As this concerns my wife’s creditability, and if it has been reported to the authorities, and record is not removed, this will ultimately affect our future dealings with banks or any financial institutes, causing us much inconvenience and/or money.

I would like you to know that this incident, in the very first place, has already caused us to lose face infront of our neighbours and relatives since the letter was delivered to me infront of them.

As such, we INSIST that a letter is written to us to clear ALL of the above requests from us, which we believe is not demand that is too much to ask for.

WLAW LLC should also follow up and clear their records and inform us of the progress, followed by making sure that the above 4 requests are carried out, in the form of written letter. This is to protect our personal interests.

Please also note that if in the future, if we find out that this case is not removed from any systems and hinders any form of application or dealings with any financial institutions, we WILL hold OCBC and WLAW LLC responsible.

I am expecting a call from both parties informing me of the final status and what will be done on your part to resolve this issue by the end of today (26th Apr 2004).

Note that in my previous mail, I have typed WLAW LLC as WLAW LCC, and I apologise for it.

I am giving you my contact once more. Mobile: 9xxxxxxx.

Best Regards,

Wee Hang Yong
acting on behalf of MS xxxxx.

knock knock…

Ξ April 23rd, 2004 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Uncategorized |

opened the door, and a nice gentlemen said “I am from xxx firm, looking for xxx.”
Me “what can I do for you? I am her husband”
He “I have a letter for her, can I have her contact number?”
Me “what is it about? and why do you wan her contact number for?”
He “well, do you know if she is in any financial problems?”
Me “Well, other than the government overcharging me, I dun see any problems”
HE “no, I mean with OCBC Credit cards, Line of Credit…”
Me “nope… not possible… we dun have any dealings with OCBC, other than housing loans”
He “but the bank engaged a lawyer to sue her and we would like to talk to her to help her with the situation”
Me “ok, you can call our house number, but can I have the letter?”
He “sure”
Me “so you wanna help her out in her financial situation?”
He “we will try to”
Me “the hospital bill for the baby came to $3000+…”
He “I cannot help you on that, sir”
Me “well, help her then”
He “I dun mean that…”
Me “yeah.. I know… just teasing you… thanks”

I collected the letter and he went off.. nice guy… called my wife and asked if I can open the letter, and she said yes.

Lo-and-behold, the bank gave us 2 days to call them or they are proceeding to sue my wife.

Called the lawyers firm, and they sound as if I owe them money, I slam the phone.

Called OCBC and this nice lady, Jean, listened to me and gave me some help, but the person in charge as gone home. And she asked me to send in a mail to her.

Well, I did one up.. I mailed to CASE, MAS, the law firm, and OCBC

—————————

Hi Jean,

I am writing in as requested by you to send in the letter that was sent to my wife, xxxx, IC SxxxxxxxA, Passport number xxxxxx

I would like to stress that she has NO, I repeat, NO VISA Credit Card nor Personal Credit Line with OCBC. The only accounts or business she has with OCBC are the HDB Housing Loan and a Personal Savings account.

As such, we demand that a thorough check be done on this big mistake, on the part of OCBC or WLAW LCC.

If OCBC and/or WLAW LCC insists that the accounts belong to her, we demand that the original application forms, and monthly statements for the above accounts, and any other kinds of prove be presented to us for verification, or your claim will be treated as threat.

And if it is found that the mail was delivered to her by mistake and that the above accounts do not belong to her, we are demanding the following from OCBC and WLAW LCC:

If in the future, we noticed that MAS, CBS, ABS or any credit authorities has any record of the above and hinders any form of transactions/applications from any financial institutes, we shall hold OCBC and/or WLAW LCC responsible.

Please treat this matter as URGENT. A police report will be lodged on the evening of 26th April 2004 if nothing is heard from either of the above mentioned parties. This is to protect our personal interests.

As such, I expect to hear from either of the parties soon.

I can be contacted at 9xxxxxxx and I am/will be speaking on behalf of/representing my wife.

Yours faithfully,

Wee Hang Yong

Singapore’s economy on the recovery?

Ξ April 19th, 2004 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Uncategorized |

so the government says that economy is bouncing back on track… so why are more and more people visiting the pawn shops to “stay afloat”?

Why are pawn shops here booming? “When people without a job need cash, this is the only way they can get it.” and I would guess that the unemployment rate in Singapore is in really really deep pool of crap. So how can the economy be on the rise?

now… what surprises me is this: “students and condominium dwellers now form up to 30 per cent of their customers” huh?? Students? WTF…. teachers.. what the hell are you teaching to kids now a days?

also, do you know that Singapore Post also runs Pawn shops? surprise surprise… our post office has transformed from a small postal service agency to a stationary shop, and now, they are even “helping the poor”! I guess the government is not going to let such a big money making chance to go solely into the private sector.. maybe Temasek will soon join the queue.

Pawnshops sprouting up amid surging business
Despite a hefty $2m in paid-up capital, the forecast is that three new shops a year will open in the coming years

By Serene Goh

PAWNBROKERS loaned $1.3 billion to Singaporeans last year and the business is surging, so much so that four new shops have opened since January.

The expansion is the fastest in seven years, making up one-fifth of the 18 that opened shop since 1997.

More are coming. The Registry of Pawnbrokers is processing five new applications, despite each having to sink in $2 million in paid-up capital before doing business.

Even Singapore Post wants a piece of the pie. It plans to launch two new pawnshops this year.

At this rate, the registry’s spokesman, Ms Wong Lai Yin, says that in the coming years, Singapore can expect an average rate of at least three new shops a year compared to one-a-year a decade ago.

The pie is growing largely because pawnshops are a quick source of cash, given often for short periods of six months. With banks’ stricter loan policies, many people are driven to pawn their possessions when they need cash after losing their jobs.

The Pawnbrokers Association estimates that of the 2.8 million transactions made by its 81 members, 1 million are by regulars in need of fast cash.

Mr Ivan Ho, its president, also dispels the notion that pawnshops swell in wealth during lean times.

Not so, he insists. They often are saddled with items they cannot sell to customers or would sell at auctions to recover mainly their costs.

Figures from the Registry of Pawnbrokers show that 93.3 per cent of auctioned items in 2001 were not contested, indicating the owners did not have the money to redeem them. Only last year did the proportion fall to 73.5 per cent. The registry is also the regulator.

To stay ahead in an increasingly crowded market, some pawnshops have spruced up their image and invested in hardware.

The newly-established ValueMax Group, with five pawnshops across the island, has a $100,000 budget to improve its services with specialised valuation equipment and replace the traditional steel bars that separate staff from customers, with tempered glass screens.

Toa Payoh stalwart Heng Seng Pawnshop, now 33 years old, has spent up to $500,000 on a sophisticated vault and security system worthy of a casino.

As for who’s pawning what, pawnbrokers say most customers continue to be older than 40 and offer gold and watches as collateral.

What’s new is that students and condominium dwellers now form up to 30 per cent of their customers, and that Singaporeans’ attitude towards pawning has changed.

Rather than pledging valuables for short-term loans, most do not redeem them. In 1994, the Registry of Pawnshops recorded $43.6 million in unredeemed pledges but by last year, that amount had swelled to $148.7 million.

Mr Lawrence Lam, 60, the valuer at Min Tai Pawnshop in Toa Payoh Central, says non-redemption was almost non-existent 25 years ago. The average length of each pawn was three months, ’six months, at the very most’.

Today, he notes: ‘When people without a job need cash, this is the only way they can get it.’

Some pawn items for money to trade in shares or to settle gambling debts. Others exchange them for bail money, while still others, like housewife Georgina Tay, are just trying to stay afloat.

The 33-year-old turned to pawnbrokers after a failed restaurant business left her $35,000 in debt. She and her husband had taken personal loans from three banks to finance their start-up costs.

‘The banks were pressuring me to pay up, and I didn’t want to lose face by borrowing from friends,’ she said, adding that she pawned her wedding jewellery for $4,000 to tide them over.

‘My only regret is that I didn’t have the money to redeem those items within six months.’
