Q2: Why is there a need to revise the Annual Values of HDB flats now?

. for 14 years, economy is NOT stable
. during these 14 years, there is NO NEED to revise the Annual Value (AV)
- why isn’t there a need to revise the AV when economy is bad? Shouldn’t it be LOWERED so that it can help us pay less? from here: revise NOT EQUAL lower
. now economy is more stable
. there IS A NEED to revise the AV
-why is it that when the economy is getting stable, there IS A NEED TO REVIEW? and since economy is stable, would the government be lowering the AV? No way! from here: revise EQUAL rise.
as such, I can conclude that whenever the government says REVISE… they mean RAISE.
Therefore: REVISE = RAISE
2. The economy is more stable now (in the view of the government), even though in reality the unemployment rate is at a 25 year high.
3. wrt to the last sentence and 1., expect the Annual Value (AV) to rise more frequently. i.e. higher Property Tax to pay, more frequently.
4. Am I supposed to thank the government for not “revising” the AV for the past 14 years? well, maybe I should thank them for not raising…. but why should it rise when economy is good and when economy is bad, it is not lowered?? It will simply mean that the price will get higher and higher and never be lowered!

LET ME TELL YOU HOW I FEEL AFTER HAVING A BABY!
1. its freaking EXPENSIVE! (and thus this US$100k will come in handy? please… where got enough?)
2. I am starting to worry how my child will grow up to be like with all the recent happenings in schools (burning teacher’s hair; reporting to police for Principal hitting student with a soft cover book when the student has been given 12 strong warnings before hand; having a teacher as “god-sister”…)
3. I am starting to worry what will my child learn in school… (with gay teacher-to-be happily writing his sexual encounters on the web, telling people he sucks dicks and screws asses; with the lowering of Mandarin standard and yet people complaining that its hard to learn and they rather be an ang moh; with the pressure of streaming students at a young age of 12 (or even lower) and differentiate them merely by exams results)
4. I am starting to worry how much time can I have with my child… (the only way to stay alive here with a 110sqm GOVERNMENT BUILT APARTMENT and no car is to have both parents working, where are we going to find time for the baby? Dun tell me that I am trying to lead a life beyond my means… a new smaller apartment will cost even more than my 7 year old one, and my pay is over the limit (which is a ridiculous $1000/mth) to buy a 3 room flat)
5. I am starting to worry how am I going to support my child till the end of tertiary education. (with an annual increase of about 5% p.a. on school fees, by the time he gets into a local University, his school fees would be about $18,500 and that is excluding bus/MRT rides and meals! And if I have a second baby… you do the maths)
6. Medical bills for anti-natal and delivery charges are crazy! (I can tell you that from the point we know my wife is pregnant, all the way till the baby is delivered, I spent more than $5k just for check ups and hospital charges, and the price will be getting higher very soon.)
7. and there are many more, but since I am having a flu, my brain cannot think too well… so I will continue later on…
So from my view, the government is simply asking people to fuck and get a baby… but they have neglected all other aspects and totally overlooked why are we not having more babies…

Singapore reality TV: 1st pregnant couple wins

SINGAPORE (AP) — The prize: US$100,000 — and a baby.
Ten couples from around the world could compete in a reality TV show in Singapore to see who can procreate first, the city-state’s self-styled sex guru said Thursday.
“We’ve not started the recruitment, but people have heard about it,” said Wei Siang Yu. “The main prize is the baby, of course.”
Wei said he hopes the show, “Dr. Love’s Super Baby Making Show,” will be beamed across the world and shown locally by MediaCorp, the government-owned national broadcaster, later this year.
Keith Cheong, an executive with the marketing and distribution department of MediaCorp Studios, confirmed that the company is discussing producing the reality show with Wei.
But details of the deal are yet to be finalized, he said.
“I don’t think there will be anything pornographic,” Wei said when asked about screening in notoriously censor-happy Singapore, where the government constantly urges citizens to start families to reverse an aging population trend.
Nine foreign couples and a Singaporean couple will take part, he said.
They will lead their normal daily lives of work and play, but will have their movements closely monitored. The winning couple will be the first to test positive with a pregnancy test kit, Wei said.
“It’s about conception, not about birth,” he added.
A worldwide survey last year by condom maker Durex showed that Singaporean couples had sex on average just 96 times in 2003 — making them the least sexually active respondents among the developed countries surveyed.
Singapore has made baby-making a top national priority after it recorded its lowest-ever birth rate last year since independence in 1965.
Only 37,633 babies were born in 2003 — way below the 50,000 it requires for defense and economic purposes.
The self-confessed nanny state has so far tried to impassion its citizens into mother- and fatherhood with tax breaks, cash bonuses, state-subsidized child care, and even a state-sponsored dating agency.
In August, a government-appointed baby-boosting committee is expected to outline a slate of new initiatives designed to motivate its citizens in the bedroom.
Among proposals under consideration: six-month maternity leaves for mothers and subsidized infant care facilities.
It was not reported in the news, but I tell you: The West bound train broke down at Outram Park Station yesterday at about 5:45pm. And how did I know?! Well…. BECAUSE I WAS STUCK IN IT!
As I was walking along the tunnel connecting the NEL and the SMRT lines, I was on the information screen that the next train will arrive in 2 mins time.
I thus started running so that I can be on that train, and being the fat me, it got me panting like no body’s business. Reached the escalator, and I still have a min left. Safe!
But once I reached the top, something seems very wrong. A train was in the station (West bound), doors are open, no one is inside, and there’s at least a thousand people (ok.. maybe I exaggerated), but hell, the place is jam packed!
Waited for 5 mins, and the train closed its doors, all these while, no announcement or what-so-ever over the PA system. The train started to move… woohoo.. safe… can catch the next train… but immediately, it stopped again, and its not another 20mins before it started to move again.

I decided to take a Taxi home since my baby is waiting for me. When I reached the gate, the damn thing wun open and the red LED keeps blinking.
Went to Station Control.
Me: I cannot get out.
SC: Where did you come from?
Me: Singapore.
SC: I mean which station?
Me: HarbourFront
SC: That is one station away, but you took more than 1 hour to leave the system?
Me: uh-huh…
SC: You have passed the time limit, you need to pay $2 fine.
Me: WHAT?! Do you know that your train broke down, and you announced over the PA asking people to wait for the next train which is not full, but non of the next 8 trains has a place for anyone to board? Its even more packed than a tin of sardine! And now that I have given up hope waiting and decided to leave the system to grab a cab home, you are asking me to pay a $2 fine?!
In the end, they deducted $0.79 from my EZ-Link and let me go out.
PS: throughout the whole incident… no one.. I repeat… NO ONE said a word of sorry to the stuck in the system…. sheesh…

I can still remember clearly the day YS comes home the very first time.
We din have any milk powder, and remembering that he was fed with S-26 in the hospital, I quickly rushed down to the the nearest NTUC to buy one can… $23.80… 900g.
1 month down the road, I received almost $800 worth of NTUC vouchers. All thanks to my colleagues and friends. I thus started to use the vouchers to buy milk powder from NTUC for my son.
Pretty soon, my sister found a place selling the exact same milk powder, selling at $19.50. Thats somewhere in Beach Road… and whoa! a total of $4.30 off!
The following day, my dad finally managed to find S-26 sold in Malaysia. Going at S$17.80!
At first, I was thinking, maybe the milk powder is manufactured in Malaysia, and imported to Singapore, thus its more expensive here. But after looking at the prints on the can, knn.. MADE IN SINGAPORE!
How can this be? How can milk powder, manufactured in Singapore, having the same weight of content, having the exact formula, be cheaper in Malaysia? Especially when it has to be exported, taxed for import, etc!
Last night, I found that S-26 is going at $18.20 in a Chinese Medicine Hall…
And I came to a conclusion…
NTUC has been ripping us off. They have been slaughtering us for the past 20+ years. With prices going at $18.20/can outside, this simply means that its cost is less than $18/can.
That also means that NTUC is making AT LEAST $5.60/can! or a difference of 23% compared to outside! And they call themselves FairPrice?!
Oh well, just a caution to people reading this… just dun trust NTUC.

三名新加坡人在纽约被怀疑是中国非法移民或偷带非法移民进入美国，遭侮辱性地扣上手铐和脚铐，然后驱逐出境。
这三名新加坡人是曹和俊（48岁）、余斯潘塞（40岁，建筑承包商）和张添发（52岁，人名皆译音）。
据《新报》报道，这三名新加坡人到美国的目的是要寻找建筑材料。
曹和俊只受过小学六年教育，只能讲一点英语，被怀疑是中国非法移民。余斯潘塞被指称试图偷带曹和俊进入美国。
张添发也和曹、余两人一起被驱逐出美国。
余斯潘塞说，他们于4月30日下午2时乘搭西北航空公司班机抵达纽约肯尼迪机场，三人一起走到入境柜台。
余斯潘塞告诉美国移民厅官员，他的二手承包商曹和俊不会讲英语。这时麻烦来了，一名女移民厅官员叫他们跟随她到办事处。
他们的新加坡护照被放在放大镜下检查，而曹和俊的护照被认为是伪造的，三人于是被分开问话，直到午夜为止。
曹和俊以华语告诉《新报》：“有关的官员告诉我，他们怀疑我是中国非法移民。我只会听及讲一点英语，这并不表示我不是新加坡人。”
美国移民厅官员通过华语通译员问曹和俊，他到美国的目的是什么，他回答说是“做工”，有关的官员于是误以为他是要到美国工作（其实他只是到美国购买建筑材料）。
问话完结后，有关官员告诉曹和俊，他被拒绝入境，因为他的新加坡护照是伪造的。
余斯潘塞说，他不知道曹和俊和张添发的全名，只知道他们的姓，官员问他曹和张的全名时他无法回答，使事情变得更糟。
张添发在接受美国官员问话时也出现语言问题，他也被误以为是要到美国寻职。
到当天午夜时分，美国官员准许余斯潘塞联络纽约的新加坡领事馆，但领事馆已过了办公时间，没人接电话。
美国移民厅拍摄了三人的照片及录下指印，把他们扣留12小时，然后把他们送上西北航空公司班机飞回新加坡。
美驻我国大使馆：曾有狮城客带中国人偷渡被捕
美国驻我国大使馆向《新报》说，一些新加坡人试图以伪造的证件，偷带中国籍人士进入美国，结果被逮捕。
发言人说：“很多这类事件在纽约被揭发。”
不过，大使馆没有提供任何这方面的数字给《新报》。
大使馆表示正查询这方面的问题。
发言人指出，在美国条例下，当有人被驱逐出境时，必须被护送到飞机上，他或她“必须受到限制（under restraints)”。
